Holidays with Depression

Wrapping paper flung about
(Why am I so sad?)
Tree is trimmed, family abounds
(Must escape to cry.)

Tear-stained cheeks - clean up, we’re here
(Where’s this coming from?!)
Hold together, one more night
(Too tired to fight now.)

Holidays are finally done
(I’ve got nothing left)
Is it time to tend to me?
I could use support.


Holidays can be a particularly trying time for many reasons - depression, anxiety, travel, relationships, grief, and more. Following closely on the heels of the holidays is the New Year. "Quick", we tell ourselves, "pull it together, leave your problems in 2017 and make this the best year ever!" while trying our hardest to convince ourselves, somehow, that 2018 will be better.

It has to be.

But the reality soon sets in, as resolutions begin to slide, as we return to work and school: New-Year-New-Me only works if the new you is being cared for, tended to, worked on. The New Year is wonderful, because it gives us hope and the courage to make changes we've wanted to make for months, whether it's financially, physically, or mentally. Sustaining these changes takes dedication and hard work. Often, it's difficult to do on our own - especially dealing with challenges like depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders... It's scary to take that first step toward healing.

If any of this has resonated with you, taking the time to invest in yourself and the changes you want to see is important. But the best things in life don't come easily or without sacrifice. Give yourself the chance to follow through with your resolutions and take the time to tend to yourself and your needs. It's not selfish. (And it's ok to not feel totally happy this time of year.)
